What is a T1 Line?
|
|
A T1 line is a business class telecommunications connection which utilizes common twisted pair copper wires, coaxial cable, or fiber optic cable. A T-1 can be used to carry voice or data communications. Using a device similar to a modem, a single set of telephone line can simultaneously carry 24 "channels" of voice conversation, many internet connections, or a combination of voice and data transmissions. In voice applications, a T1 line is suitable for use with muti-line telephone systems, and depending upon call volume, may service about 100 users. Dedicated T1 lines provide an excellent medium for todays low cost VoIP calling plans.
There are various types of T1 lines:
- Internet T1: 1.5M internet speeds up and down. These lines are dedicated lines, not shared. The speeds are not degraded by over subscription or distance, as is the case with DSL lines.
- Voice T1: As described above.
- Fractional T1 Line: T1 lines can be divided into halves, quarters, etc. The capabilities of fractional T-1 lines are decreased by the fraction, but the costs are not.
- Multiple T1 Lines: More than one T1 line, each operating independently.
- Bonded T1 Lines: More than one T1 line bonded together and operating as one line with increased capacity.
- Voice T1 - PRI: The T1/PRI typically allots 23 channels to voice and 1 channel to data applications.
- Integrated T1: Voice and data on one T1 line, where the user sets the number of channels to be used for either.
- Burstable T1: Provides a set amount of bandwidth based on the users minimum needs, but allows for periods of peak useage. Additional bandwidth during peak periods are billed on a "pay for what you use" basis.

T1 Reliability
|
|
In many businesses today data transfer has become an intregal part of the prospecting and sales processes. From POS, email from/to customers, company websites, and online catalogs, to more demanding applications like, telecommuting and video teleconferences; most businesses depend on some form of internet data transfer. Furthermore, many businesses have discovered that business DSL service isn't as reliable as they would like. DSL slow down due to over subscription of service is a problem virtually everywhere. It is cruelly ironic that the periods of slow down are when your business is peaking and you have the most customers to service, and potentially, the most business to lose. When reliability begins to affect your bottom line it is time to consider a T1 line.
A T1 internet connection is a dedicated internet line. Your business is the only subscriber on that line, service is not shared with neighboring businesses and residences. Additionally, a T1 connection typically comes with much more rigidly defined SLA's (Service Level Agreement) than a DSL line would, if your DSL provider has them at all. The tighter SLA's result in the T1's receiving top priority when addressing service problems. Your business DSL line waits while T1 problems are corrected first. Or put another way, your DSL dependent business suffers, while the business with a T1 line is at full speed, and possibly taking the business you are losing.
